Eligibility:
To qualify for a Texas CHL you must:
1.
Be a legal resident of Texas for the six month period preceding
the date of application, OR be otherwise eligible under § 411.173(a).
As of September 1, 2005 under HB 225 a legal resident of
another state who meets the eligibility criteria other
than residency may obtain a non-resident concealed handgun
license. They must obtain a Texas
identification card issued by the Texas Department
of Public Safety and take the classes in Texas. They will
have to undergo the same background checks as Texas residents
to insure eligibility.
2. Be at least 21 years old (Note: Texas Law changed on September
1, 2005 : Applicants who are currently serving or honorably
discharged from any branch of the U.S. military; active, guard,
or reserves, may obtain a Texas CHL age 18 or older).
3. Have a clean criminal history, including military service and recent juvenile records (see link to actual law below).
4. Not be under a protective order (see link to actual law below).
5. Not be chemically dependent (see link to actual law below).
6. Not be of unsound mind (see link to actual law below).
7. Not be delinquent in paying fines, fees, child support, student loans, etc. (see link to actual law below)
8. Be fully qualified under applicable federal and state law
to purchase a handgun from a Federal Firearms Dealer (for purposes
of obtaining a Texas CHL, the federal minimim age of 21 does
not apply to persons between age 18 and 21 currently serving
or honorably discharged from any branch of the U.S. military;
active, guard, or reserves --- HOWEVER such person is STILL
barred by federal law from purchasing handguns and ammunition
from a
Federal Firearms Dealer).

Time:
Initial course: 8:00 A.M. to 6:00
P.M. (10 hours required)
Renewal course: 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. (4 hours required)
Class subjects, duration (hours), and shooting range course of fire are mandated by the State of Texas.
All
classroom material will be presented in 50 minute blocks, with
10 minute breaks each hour.

Range Instruction:
(Same requirements for Initial
Training and Renewal Training):
1. Minimum passing shooting score is 70%, using a standard
NRA B-27 police training silhouette target.
2. The student must demonstrate safety in firing a weapon
at three, seven, and fifteen yards, for a total of fifty rounds.
a. Twenty rounds will be fired from three yards.
b. Twenty rounds will be fired from seven yards.
c. Ten rounds will be fired from fifteen yards.
Range Safety:
1. All NRA gun safety rules and Jeff Cooper's Rules for Gun Safety will be strictly enforced (see below).
2. In accordance with Texas State laws, safety violations may result in immediate expulsion from the course.

b. Never let the muzzle cover anything
you are not willing to destroy.

What to bring:
Bring the following items with you to the classroom:
1. CHL application package mailed
to you from the DPS (you CAN still
attend our class if you havn't received your preprinted package
from the DPS. We will have blank application packages
in class.)
2. Receipt for the Instructor fee printed from this website (online
payment is preferred in order to reserve your place in class,
but you
may pay
cash on the day of class if you need to. Please notify us as soon as possible
if you need to
pay cash on the day of class,
so that we
can reserve your place in class.)
3. Release of Liability form printed from this website.
4. Please do NOT bring firearms in to the academic classroom
(keep them locked up and out of sight in your vehicle until
we leave the
academic classroom and go to the shooting range).
Bring the following items with you to the shooting range:
1. Hearing protection (over-the-ear "muff" type).
2. Eye protection (shooting glasses, or shatter-proof corrective
vision glasses).
3. Handgun (.32 caliber minimum).
4. Gun case for your handgun (soft case or hard case).
5. At least 50 rounds of ammunition (no reloaded ammunition
allowed...only SAAMI-approved
factory ammunition allowed).
NOTES:
a. Handguns will be inspected for safety by a firearms
instructor before being used on the range. We encourage you
to use your own
handgun,
however, handguns found to be unsafe or noticeably unreliable
will not be
allowed on
the range.
b. Handguns for the course may be rented for $10
with advance notification (send us an email to reserve
a gun if you
need one).
c. Ammunition for the course may be available for
purchase with advance notification (send us an email to reserve ammo
if you need it).
d. We recommend you use a semi-automatic pistol for the course,
to receive an unrestricted license
(if
you use a revolver, then your license will be restricted
to revolvers only).
e. ALL handguns used in the training course must
be at least .32 caliber.
f. After completing the course, you may carry any caliber
of handgun.
