This is a genuine German military issue general-purpose machine gun.
The Maschinengewehr 34, or MG 34, German machine gun was first designed and accepted for service in 1934. It is an air-cooled machine gun firing 8mm Mauser (7.92x57mm) rounds and has similar performance to other medium machine guns.
It is designed to perform both as a light machine gun and also in heavier roles, and is therefore a good example of a true general-purpose machine gun. In the light role, it is intended to be equipped with a bipod and 75-round drum. In the heavier role it is mounted on a larger tripod and is belt-fed. In practice users frequently belt-feed the bipod version, resulting in it functioning as a classic medium support weapon.
The MG 34 uses both magazine-fed and belt-fed 8mm Mauser (7.92x57mm) ammunition. Belts are supplied in 50-round single strips or 250-round boxes. The drums hold either 50 rounds in the standard single-drum version, or 75 in the "double-drum" version.
In the light machine gun role it is used with a bipod and weighs only 26.5 pounds. In the medium machine gun role it can be mounted on one of two tripods, a smaller one weighing 15 pounds, the larger 52 pounds. The larger tripod, the "Lafette", includes a number of features such as a scope and special sighting equipment for indirect fire. The legs can be lowered to allow the gun to be fired "remotely" while it sweeps an arc in front of the mounting with fire, or aimed through a periscope attached to the tripod.
