Yugoslavian (Serbian) Zastava Arms Puskomitraljezi-Mitrajez M-53 SARAC.
This is a genuine Yugoslavian military issue general-purpose machine gun.
Yugoslavian weapons factories maintain an extremely high degree of quality control and use excellent quality materials.
The German Maschinengewehr 42, or MG 42, was produced in Yugoslavia with German tooling during the 1940s. The Yugoslavs are experts at reproducing and improving upon existing weapons designs. Yugoslavia took advantage of the tooling left behind by the Germans and of the skills learned from the Germans, and continued making the MG 42 (designated 'M-53') in Yugoslavian factories after WWII.
The Yugoslavian M-53 is an extremely well made license-built copy of the German MG 42. The MG 42 had an 1100-1200 RPM rate of fire, which was excessive for most practical applications. The M-53 retains the original 8mm (7.92 x 57 mm) caliber, and most parts are interchangeable with the MG 42, and it looks identical to the German MG 42, but the Yugoslavian M-53 incorporates a more practical 850 rounds per minute rate of fire.
The M-53 uses both magazine-fed and belt-fed 8mm Mauser (7.92x57mm) ammunition.
In the medium machine gun role it can be mounted on one of two tripods, a smaller one weighing 15 pounds, the larger 52 pounds. The larger tripod, the "Lafette", includes a number of features such as a scope and special sighting equipment for indirect fire. The legs can be lowered to allow the gun to be fired "remotely" while it sweeps an arc in front of the mounting with fire, or aimed through a periscope attached to the tripod.
