The G36 is a true modular weapon system in caliber 5.56mm x 45 NATO (.223 Remington). The G36E variant is the "Export" model, with a 1.5x optical sight rather than the 3x optical sight used by the German Army ("Bundeswehr"). The G36 has been the main infantry weapon of the Bundeswehr since 1995. The G36 is also used by a number of European police forces, such as the British Police, French RAID and GIPN, Bundespolizei (German federal police), and Dutch police forces. Poland has equipped it's counter-terrorist units with the G36C and G36E. The G36 is also used by a number of North American law enforcement agencies including, but not limited to, the United States Capitol Police, L.A.P.D. and S.W.A.T.
Constructed almost entirely of a tough, carbon fiber reinforced polymer material and using a simple, clean shooting self-regulating gas system, the G36 provides the user with a lightweight weapon that delivers high performance with extremely low maintenance.
The barrel of the G36 can be exchanged by unit armorers to create a rifle, a short carbine, carbine, or light support variant using the same common receiver.
Exhaustively tested and currently fielded by the German and Spanish Armed Forces (including the new NATO Rapid Reaction Force), the G36 is now available to U.S. law enforcement and military customers.
